The Hunt for the Perfect Acai Bowl

If you haven’t heard of açaí (ah-sigh-ee) bowl, here is the rundown;

The açaí berry comes from açaí palm trees located in Brazil, Trinidad and northern regions of South America. It is hailed as a potent superfood with benefits including high antioxidants, skin health, weight maintenance, digestion, cellular health and immunity. Açaí berry powder or paste is blended with frozen fruits and a liquid, like coconut water or almond milk, to create a creamy purple smoothie base to which you then add ingredients like fruit, granola or nuts to create an açaí bowl.

Açaí bowls have become an Instagram worthy breakfast option (although I have had an açaí bowl for a very satisfying dinner before) with its vibrant colours and usually cute and compact bowl varieties. I have had an abundance of açaí bowls mostly in Hawaii and Australia where they are incredibly popular and in my opinion have some of the best açaí bowls anywhere.

Some of my must try places for açaí bowls include:

Basik Açaí – Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Where my açaí bowl obsession was created. Basik Açaí is a small, local-loved spot with some amazing varieties. Best highlight? The honey they use from the Big Island bees is incredible.

Diamond Head Cove Health Bar – Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

This is actually where I had my first ever açaí bowl almost four years ago. Another local joint with amazing breakfast and bowls. Best highlight? Big portions with customizable additions. Also, they use Big Island honey.

Burleigh Social – Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast, Australia

Tried this lovely little brekkie spot on the Gold Coast last week and loved it. They have mostly coconut water based bowls which are very hydrating and refreshing. Best highlight? The gluten-free granola is bad ass.

Love Juice Superfood – Manly, Queensland, Australia

Any easy favourite. This place has SO many varieties to choose from with bowls infused with rawtella (vegan nutella), peanut butter, matcha and even espresso. The bowls are a little pricier than other places, but they do not disappoint. Best highlight? Literally a flavour of açaí bowl for any craving – so many options.

I plan on continuing the search for the perfect açaí bowl which has easily become a literal food group of its own in my diet. My personal favourite ingredients include passionfruit, bee pollen, honey, bananas and gluten-free granola. The possibilities are endless – the hunt continues…
